Starting a blog is scary. If you’re like me, you fear failure and what other people will think. Am I good enough to do it? Will people even care about what I write? You might wonder.
I know exactly how that feels.
All those thoughts have come through my mind, not only 5+ years ago when I first started blogging but also as I type this. The thing is, I love it more than I want to listen to those harmful thoughts running through my mind. And it has done so many good things for me, giving me a voice, a creative outlet and showing me a beautiful world of possibilites.
Blogging is a tool that can help you grow as a person and inspire others with your story along the way. Click To TweetSo whether you’ve been thinking about starting a blog but are letting fear control you, or are not sure why you should start one in the first place, I’m sharing with you 7 ways how starting a blog can improve your life.
By writing this post, I hope to give you that little push or show you how you can at least consider it. And if you’re a blogger already, feel free to share below your experience and any other ways blogging has improved your life.
How Starting a Blog Can Improve Your Life
1. Blogging challenges yourself.
Blogging will challenge you to get out of your comfort zone. Whether that is sharing your content on social media when you’re afraid to be too pushy, being vulnerable online, networking with other bloggers or learning how to start a blog from scratch.
If you don’t feel challenged at your job, blogging is a great way to spruce up your everyday life and be pushed outside of your comfort zone.
2. Blogging is a creative outlet.
Have you ever felt like you aren’t able to talk about certain things with people in your life? Maybe you are so passionate about something that you feel like people don’t really want to hear you talk about it for hours. Maybe you’re not comfortable talking about your inner struggles with your family or friends.
Blogging will give you a voice, a creative outlet that will allow you to share your passions. For some weird reason, it can be so much easier to be vulnerable online, with people you never met, than with the closest people around you.
On the other end, we spend so much time of our life consuming when creating is much more satisfying.

One of the most beautiful things about blogging is making new friends. I’ve never actually met anyone in person (yet!) but I have met a handful group of wonderful girls that I would probably never meet otherwise since we live in different parts of the world.
It’s amazing how bloggers can understand each other since we can instantly connect. Blogging is a great way to develop relationships and meet people with similar interests.
4. Blogging is an opportunity to learn new skills.
Personally, blogging helped me to improve my writing skills, especially since my first language is not english but portuguese. When I started, I didn’t know much about photography or putting together a blogpost. I also had to teach myself how to set a wordpress blog and how to customize HTML code.
It might be scary or overwhelming but it’s empowering to overcome a challenge and learn a new skill. And the more time you put into something, the better you will get.
Blogging can also teach you how to communicate online, promote your work, be disciplined by sticking to a schedule and organized when it comes to creating a blogpost.
5. Blogging can help you become an expertise.
Have you ever thought about transforming your passion into an area of expertise? Blogging can help you do just that. It’s a way to gain experience. I’m pretty sure one of the reasons why I got the job I’m at was because I had a blog. I work in digital marketing and knowledge of wordpress and social media was beneficial.
If you're passionate about something, use your blog as a platform to practice and show your knowledge. Click To Tweet6.Blogging helps you understand who you are.
Writing is a powerful way that can give you a major advantage in life by helping you understand who you truly are and what kind of thoughts go through your head.
A blog is a platform that allows you to document your life. It will be the creative outlet you need to share your passions. It’s also interesting to see how you evolve through your journey: learning what to enjoy writing about the most, developing a photography style or feeling less anxious to start a conversation with another blogger.
7. Blogging is a tool to inspire others.
You might not have a life as interesting as some of those famous fashion bloggers, but you do have a story to tell. And I’m 100% sure there is someone out there that will relate to your story or learn something from your article.
I lost count of how many blogposts have helped or inspired me in some way and all I hope is that whoever reads Notes from Joana feels the same way. It’s not about being better or knowing it all (trust me, I have no idea what I’m doing). It’s about sharing my experience.

LOVE THIS! Blogging has improved my life in so many ways (many of which you’ve mentioned above). It definitely stimulates and challenges me in a way that I can’t get from my day job, which I’m so grateful for. It motivates me to look good, feel good, and ready to conquer the world!

Completely agree with everything you said, Lisa! It’s not always easy but starting a blog was one of the best things I ever did. I love how it is not only empowering but also the creative escape from my day job. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! 🙂 x
So true!! I think blogging is one of the best ways to pick up new skills and in some kind of odd way, its how i gained so much more confidence in myself 🙂
x Carina
Agree with the confidence, too! I think it’s because we’re writing about something we’re passionate about and are able to connect with others who understand us somehow 🙂 x
The biggest thing blogging has done for me has been that it encourages me to live a life worth blogging about. I mean, I still live as simple a life as ever, but I’ve taken more opportunities that I previously might have been hesitant or scared or too lazy to take. Another thing blogging has done for me was help me practice self-awareness and mindfulness 🙂 -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s
That’s a good one and I completely agree! Blogging encourages me to step out of my comfort zone in so many ways – mainly when you go a little further just to take a pretty photo for your blogpost haha – and it also helps to be more present and grateful 🙂 x
