As a self-proclaimed introvert, I treasure my alone time. Spending time with family and friends is something that brings me a lot of joy but I find that I need my time to recharge, think and enjoy my own company. After all, the relationship that matters the most is the one we have with ourselves.
A lot of people mistake being alone with feeling lonely and that couldn’t be more far from the truth. Sometimes I feel the loneliest when I’m surrounded by people.
Being alone is about learning to appreciate your own company and feeling comfortable being in solitude with yourself and your thoughts. But I understand that not everyone enjoys solitude as much as I do, and that’s completely okay. What I do believe in, is that taking time for yourself is important and that it is beneficial for all of us, even if it’s just 10 minutes of your day.

It gives you time to think
It’s easy to get caught up in everything that is going on in our lives or on social media and our FOMO (fear of missing out) make us feel like we need to keep up. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, take some time for yourself. Sometimes all we need is a break to organize our thoughts and figure everything out. I recently came across this quote by Oprah: “Alone time is when I distance myself from the voices of the world so I can hear my own.” – I couldn’t agree more. Go on a walk, write down your feelings or just lay in bed listening to your own thoughts, it will help you see everything more clearly.
Helps you create a better relationship with yourself
Spending time with yourself means you’re listening to your own thoughts and needs. You start noticing how you think and what you like & don’t like without being influenced by people around you. Appreciate life through your own perspective. Give space for self discovery and explore your personality. Discover how awesome you are, what you like and what makes you happiest. Try out new things like meditation and play with your creativity, no one’s there to judge, anyway.
Your time to relax & recharge batteries
Self-care is super important and taking time to enjoy your own company not only helps to clear your mind but it’s also a great way to recharge your body. Sometimes all you need is to disconnect from the world outside for a little while – see here why it’s important to switch off – and enjoy your own company. Take a bubble bath, read a good book or make yourself a good cup of tea or hot chocolate.
You become more independent
Being alone forces you to become less dependent on others. While it’s great to have people you can ask for advice or company, sometimes it’s good to do things on your own, just to prove yourself you can do it alone. You will eventually start trusting your instincts and feel more confident about yourself. As I’ve shared with you, a couple of months ago I bought the tickets to my first little solo trip and even though this is probably the scariest thing I’ve ever done, I believe it’s something I need to do for myself. I realized that I am the biggest responsible in making myself happy.
You can do whatever you want
What’s the best thing about being alone? You can do whatever you want. Binge on Netflix, eat ice cream for dinner or have a solo karaoke/dance party, no one is there to judge you. Have a movie nigh in alone, you pick which to watch. Go shopping and try everything you want, even when you know you can’t afford that much stuff – there’s no one there complaining how long you take. Explore a town near you, you’re the one picking what to see and where to eat! While it’s great having someone there with you to share those little moments, doing it solo can be as exciting!
Don’t feel guilty for taking time for yourself. It’s good for you, it’s an opportunity to stop doing things for others and pay attention to your own needs. It doesn’t mean your selfish, at all. You are important and deserve that time!
