If you have been reading my blog for a while, you might have noticed my passion for goal setting. But when the new year began, I wondered if it was worth it to set any resolutions for 2017. Nothing really changes from the night of December 31st to January 1st, right? There is no new year, new me. It’s definitely not something I’m pursuing. I suppose it’s more new year, same me. And truly appreciating that me, as I am, yet work on improving a few things.
Instead, I decided to pick a word for the year: brave. A word is simply there as a reminder of what I need to focus on throughout the year.
But I kept thinking about what I would like to achieve or ways to better myself this year. So I caved in and set myself some realistic goals.
Create a routine that makes mornings more enjoyable.
While it is very hard for me to wake up super early for work, I actually enjoy early mornings. That’s the time of the day when I’m most productive and inspired. Since reading The Miracle Morning by Hal Erold, I’ve been wanting to create a morning routine that I look forward to. For me, the first thing to do is to start going to bed a little bit earlier and introduce 10 minutes of meditation in the morning.
Write in my gratitude journal every day.
I’ve been doing this for the past two months and it has helped me put things into perspective. It’s a great way to start and end the day on a positive note. Plus, it’s said to lower stress levels and increase happiness so I definitely want to keep this habit in 2017.
Again, something I’ve been wanting to do for a while. My brain doesn’t simply shut off. I’m always thinking, worrying or dreaming about something and I feel like journaling will be a great way to put my thoughts into words and, with that, find clarity.
Be more active.
Since I became an adult
(still doesn’t feel like one, though) with a full-time job, I’ve been spending the majority of my day sitting at a desk. I used to walk pretty much everywhere when I was back in uni or even around my hometown and I’ve started to notice how I am sooo out of shape.
I’m not saying I will start going to the gym twice a week but I do want to be more active. Whether that is going for walks, doing yoga or exercising at home.
Spend more time offline.
Another goal for the year is to limit my screen time. After spending eight hours at work in front of a computer screen, I come home to spend a few more hours in front of another screen, whether that is my laptop, phone or tv. The worst part is that, more often than not, I’m mindlessly scrolling through Facebook with no particular intention while I could do something better or far more productive with my life. Aside from being more mindful of how I spend my time online, another goal is to avoid my phone during
The worst part is that, more often than not, I’m mindlessly scrolling through Facebook with no particular intention while I could be doing something better or far more productive with my time.
Aside from being more mindful of how I spend my time online, another goal is to avoid my phone during first hour in the morning and night.
Read fifteen books.
Related to the goal above, I want to read fiften books, at least, in 2017. Reading is one of my favorite ways to switch off but I haven’t dedicated much time to it lately so I plan on picking up a book more often, at least a few minutes before bedtime.
Try some new hobbies.
Again, this is also related to my goal of spending more time offline. Instead of wasting so much time mindlessly scrolling through social media, I want to develop some new hobbies, as water color brush lettering (which I already started in December and have been loving it!), puzzles (I already started this, as well, since I got it for Christmas, and find it super relaxing and quite addciting), knitting, and scrap booking.
Increase the amount of water I drink.
A typical new year resolution, I know. And I do love water but I simply forget to drink more often throughout the day. As a motivation, I got a cool glass water bottle so hopefully, that will help.
Practice self-care daily.
I want to set aside some “me time” daily, even if it’s just five minutes to do something that makes me feel good, and truly appreciate it. Self-care is a lot more than bubble baths or pamper sessions. It is taking care of your body, mind, and soul. For me, it also means improving the relationship and showing more love towards myself.
Declutter my bedroom.
Something I’ve been putting off for months but it has to be done. I need to go through all my stuff and get rid of everything I don’t need or don’t want anymore. Not Marie Kondo style because I’m not really a minimalist, but simply decluttering my space.
Go on another solo trip.
It’s been a little bit more than a year since I gathered the courage to go on my first solo trip. It wasn’t perfect but it certainly taught me a lot of things about myself. This year I would love to do it again.
Can’t forget about my word for 2017: brave. As I said, for me brave is not about doing crazy, brave things but to take the first step, accept who I really am, yet work on bettering myself, say yes more often and dream bigger.
Start monetizing my blog.
This is a sensitive topic but if there is a possibility of making some extra money doing something I love I definitely want to give it a try and explore my possibilities.
Write (at least) one blog post per week.
I’ve noticed that when I am consistent and post frequently my pageviews increase. Plus, I like when bloggers I follow are consistent with their scheduling. It’s nice to know “uh, on Monday’s blogger X has always a new post up” so I really want to do that. I also want to have a blog post scheduled ahead of time so I don’t have to stress the night before.
Strengthen online friendships.
I’ve been very lucky to meet some lovely girls through blogging and this year I really want to make an effort to meet more people and strengthen online friendships, from leaving a mindful comment on someone’s blog post, saying hello on social media or even meeting someone in person.
Send out a monthly email.
I started working on my email list in 2016 but then it kind of got forgotten. And I believe it is a great platform to explore and a way to create a better relationship with readers. I’m thinking about sending a monthly newsletter with things, moments, products, books, resources, etc. I loved during the month or even rescue my Let’s Chat posts and send them in email form.
Start a youtube channel.
Something I’ve been wanting to do since my first year of uni (it has been almost two since I graduated!) but always lacked the guts to do it. Will 2017 be the year? I hope so because I personally love watching vlogs and believe it can give you a different perspective of who I am.
Launch my business.
This is a big goal for the year and I’m quite scared of writing here because somehow it sounds more real and I’m making myself accountable. But I will not talk much about it just yet because I prefer to have a clear idea of how everything will look before sharing it with anyone – big perfectionist here – so I’m just putting it out there for now. When the time is right, you will know, promise.
What are your goals for 2017?
