As the new year approaches, it’s time to take a step back and reflect on 2017. When I started writing this blog post on my phone, at first I struggled to come up with things and even wondered how in the world would I find seventeen. As per usual, I tend to look for big, exciting things that happened and forget the small moments that were also significant and helped made 2017 a happy year.
It wasn’t all good though. Our apartment was robbed earlier in the year, my mental health was all over the place, I quit a job that was making it worse, and have been unemployed for the last three months of the year. But I’m choosing to focus on the good things that happened. And I am so grateful for all of them!
17 Good Things In 2017.
01: Visiting Rome and Milan for the first time last November. Rome had been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember and it definitely did not disappoint – must go back soon because there’s still so much to see
02: Booking two exciting things for 2018: one is a trip and another one a concert. I’m kind of cheating here because the actual things will only happen in 2018, not 2017, but I was very excited to book both and have something to look forward to.
03: Quitting a job that I was not happy at and was affecting my mental health. It was a hard decision but I believe it was the right thing to do.
04: Working harder on my blog and starting to see the positive results coming from it. I feel like this was the year that I figured my blog’s purpose and where I want to go with it, which has made me feel more motivated + inspired than ever. I’ve been very happy with the content and photographs and even gave it a new look later in the year! Btw, THANK YOU so much for your support, it really means the world to me!!
05: Being a contributor to Glitter Guide! Back in August, I came across an article on Glitter Guide looking for Fall contributors. To be honest, I always doubt myself so I thought they wouldn’t pick me. But they did! I’ve been the lifestyle contributor for a few months now and it has been lovely to write for a website that I had been admiring for so long. This year I also contributed to the Thought Catalog with an article on the impostor syndrome.
06: Going on Summer holidays with my parents to Algarve. Because I was interning for pretty much all of 2016, I didn’t have any Summer break so you can imagine my excitement by being able to swim in the sea and sunbathe at the beach after two years.
07: Hanging out with my girlfriends even though we don’t see each other that often anymore. Once you become an adult, it gets very hard to meet up with friends who have different jobs/live in the different cities. It’s nice to know that no matter the time or distance when you do get together, it seems like only a week went by.
08: Upgrading my camera and upping my blog photography game. After my camera being stolen from our apartment back in April, I decided to save up and invest in a better one. After a few months of saving, I ended up buying the Canon 6D and I absolutely love it!
09: Telling my best friend about my blog and getting her lovely support. It took me 2 years and a half to finally tell her about my blog because I worry too much about what others think. I was preparing myself for the worst thinking people would laugh and think I’m silly for keeping a blog and sharing my thoughts online. But she couldn’t have had a better reaction!
10: Discovering Gilmore Girls. Yes, you read that right. I wondered if I should include this here but I figured that it really deserves the spot because it was, no doubt, one of the best discoveries of the year. I made me laugh and cry and taught me so much about life – it has surely become one of my favorite tv shows!
11: Going to Madrid with my parents in January to celebrate my dad’s birthday. I feel very lucky to have parents who share the same love for traveling!
12: Reading 11 books. I’ve loved reading for as long as I can remember but I go through these phases once in a while that I fall out of it. But this year I was all about buying books (still have about 7 that I bought and didn’t manage to read) and going to bed a bit earlier so that I could have time to read.
13: Reaching 10 000 monthly visits on my blog! I try my best to not focus too much on numbers but it’s always rewarding to reach your goals and see your blog grow. Pretty much thanks to Pinterest, my blog reached and overcame the 10 000 monthly views for the first time (in three years) this December!
14: Designing a very exciting thing coming up in the first months of 2018. Although it involved a lot of procrastination as I feared (and still do, to be honest) that it wasn’t good enough or that people wouldn’t be interested but I guess I’ll never know if I never try, right?
15: Going to Lisbon with a very good friend from high school. We both studied in the city for some time so it was nice to go back with her and stay for a night.
16: Piercing my ears this November. I got my ears pierced for the first time when I was around 11 but a few years later, one got an infection and I never wore earrings again. It wasn’t until about a year ago that I actually wanted to be able to wear earrings again so I did it last month.
17: Being more vulnerable. I feel like this was the year of vulnerability in many ways. I’ve always kept a lot to myself but in 2017 I made an effort to let my walls down and speak my truth, whether in real life or through my blog. It can’t tell you how scary it was but guess what? It only brought me good things.
